Oldboy first occurred to me as a highly rated Korean film about three years back. A few friends of mine told me repeatedly to go through it and finally One evening I decided to give it a go and boy what an experience it was.
‘REVENGE IS A DISH BEST SERVED COLD’….its a popular phrase for all those QT fans out there but its Oldboy which justifies it with ultimate vigor and elan. What is the worst thing that you can do to a man for a wrong done to you years back. well we can take away his life right…..WRONG. Sometimes life can be made a bigger punishment than death and thats what Oldboy shows us.
The story revolves around Oh Daesu(Min-sik Choi), who is kidnapped one fateful night and imprisoned in a secluded room fro 15 years. he is finally released and given 5 days to find his captor or else loose his life. I will not speak a word more about the story or it will be spoiling the fun. You need to watch it to enjoy it.
Chan Woo Park actually put the Korean films on the world map with this outstanding achievement. Some might find it linear and in some cases too out of the world, but the fact of the matter remains that it is a revenge saga and not a documentary. one has to enjoy it for what it is. The two protagonists of the film Ji-tae Yu and Min-sik-Choi deliver knockout performances which will make you stand up and take notice of not only their sheer stage persona but also their authoritative performance. The direction is flawless and the Editing is crisp. Many greats have said that a film is actually born on the editing table. Its very true in case of OLD BOY. It wouldn’t have been the same without the awesome editing.
Revenge seems to be the flavor for Korean Films and with this kind of achievements we are not complaining are we??? It is by far the most shocking tale of revenge ever told. Watch it, enjoy it and behold its prowess.
