The king of comedy of the yester years David Dhawan who not so long ago gave us the rib-tickling Partner which in turns was a remake of the immensely popular Hitch comes back to make one for his son who made a prodigal debut in Student Of The Year. For all those who have already seen Paglu 2(Bengali film) starring Deb, this is just different characters reprising the same roles. The story revolves around a small town boy Senu (Varun Dhawan) who comes to Bangalore to get a degree after being routed in his home town but gets entangled with a girl Sunaina (Ileana D’Cruz) who is being blackmailed by an enforcer Angad (Arunoday Singh) into marriage. The duo spark off a relationship and with Senu taming the enforcer, things start looking bright for the couple. But as luck would have it, Senu’s cocky antics lands him in the attention of Ayesha (Nargis Fakhri) the daughter of an international don Vikrant (Anupam Kher). Vikrant wants to get her daughter married to Senu and so kidnaps Sunaina to keep Senu under leash. What follows is a series of meant to be funny situations leading up to the finale.
Main Tera Hero is fast paced and has swagger about it. The good looking cast backed by a hero who really gives in his everything to make the film works does make a lot of difference to an otherwise insipid tale. There are gags aplenty but none of them really stay with you after the film is done. They will at best extract a smirk form you. The characters and the setting constantly give you a feeling of being there and having seen that before which doesn’t go in too well with the freshness of the film. The action sequences are limited and somewhat well executed.
David Dhawan would have done much well to have jotted down his own script. Probably remakes but still his indianized comedy of Coolie no.1, Hero no.1, etc made us roll out with laughter and they are still some of the best Indian comedies ever. The sheer audacity and over the topness of these films characterized the David Dhawan style comedy which would have gone well with Main Tera Hero. This is where the film goes wrong when it tries to mellow down the narrative trying to make it believable but falter on the fun that it had promised.
Varun Dhawan does extremely well and is an able man to carry a film on his shoulders. He looks comfortable in the part and has good comic timing. He is present in almost scene of the film and makes most of his screen time. Ileana D’Cruz is good but she just doesn’t have much to do here. After Barfi! she has landed up with two listless characters in two films which could have employed anyone for the same roles. Nargis Fakhri with her pouty lips looks alluring and her accent serves her well here as she is in a foreign setting. However again she doesn’t have much to do on the acting front. Arunoday Singh is passable. Rajpal Yadav is wasted. The rest of the cast including Anupam Kher, Saurab Shukla are passable.
Overall, Main Tera Hero is just another run of the mills comedy which boasts of being an action comedy flick when the fact of the matter is that there is very little actual action. The film could have been much better with some genuine comic moments and had it been a little snappier and a tad bit more outrageous. This is one of those films which also succumbed to its high expectations. It is still a passable one time watch but that’s about it.
